The motor vehicle gear change mechanism comprises an automatic planetary gear change mechanism (6) which is driven (6.1) by the engine output shaft (1,2) via an auxiliary transmission (4.1-4.7,5) receiving its input from a main clutch (3.1-3.6). This transmission, which pref. consists of bevel gears (4.2-4.4,5), provides two or more switchable (4.5,4.6) forward gear ratios (4.2,4.3) and one switchable (4.7) reverse ratio (4.4). The main clutch is pref. automatically servo-operated (3.5) when the auxiliary gearing is switched so that no clutch pedal is required. The mechanism may contain three forward ratios automatically switchable by two brakes and a clutch, pref. a dry friction disc clutch spring-loaded to engage and disengaged by a piston actuator.
