A process is claimed for the conversion to fuels of the vegetable residues of cotton harvesting. Stalks, branches and leaves of the cotton plant and cotton capsules and fibres are ground to a 0.1-200 micron powder, from which the small amt. of remaining fibres (linters) are removed in vibratory sieves. The powder can be burnt in power stations or gas turbines, or gasified, or hydrogenated in mixt. with heavy oil; or it may be mixed with water and pressed, the pressings being then burnt or pyrolysed. The potential renewable supply of fuels by the process is very large: world-wide it is the equiv. of about 10 million barrels of oil per day. The linters are a valuable by-prod.
|
