The branching is done with at least three light guides, the polished end surface of a common light guide being connected to the polished end faces of the branching light guides by bonding, and the diameters of the branching light guides being smaller than the diameter of the common light guide. The object is to reduce substantially the light losses occurring in such branching. The essence of the solution is that the cores of the branching light guides are processed such that their edges do not project beyond the edge of the core of the common light guide. The invention is applied principally as an optical multiplexer for communicating via light guides.
