The cattle restraint has an insertion opening (1) with its side sections (2,7) engaging the animal at either side behind the head and its top section provided by a movable clamping arm (12), which prevents the animals neck being lifted from the insertion opening (1) when it is dropped into the working position. The clamping arm (12) is moved out of the working position by sliding or pivoting it upwards, so that in the normal open position its centre of gravity does not reach the upper dead point. Pref. the clamping arm (12) is curved over at its free end (16) to form the upper part of one of the side sections (7). It pref. extends in a direction which forms an angle with the plane of the insertion opening (1).
