The coupling, consists of a glass fibre (1) embedded in a medium or material (5) with a lower refractive index than the sheath of the glass fibre (1). The system fibre (2) with a core (3), is joined to the glass fibre (1) whose sheath thickness is less than 5 micro-m, whereby variations in the order of magnitude of 100 per cent are allowed. More important than the thinners of the sheath of the glass fibres, is that the coupling fibres be embedded in an optical adhesive which is as homogeneous as possible and has no bubbles in it. This is necessary to ensure an ideal reflection at the boundary surface between sheath and adhesive. This coupling reduces losses when used in an optical communications system.
|
