Copolymerizable polyesters are obtained by reacting together a dicarboxylic acid, a dihydric alcohol and a monohydric alcohol of formula <FORM:0996709/C3/1> where (a) is an unsaturated and unbranched aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and (b) is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or an aromatic hydrocarbon radical bonded directly to the oxygen atom. The dihydric alcohol may be in the stoichiometric proportion required to completely esterify the dicarboxylic acid, and the monohydric alcohol may be in a proportion to provide 10 to 20% of the hydroxyl groups provided by the dihydric alcohol. The polyesters may be cross-linked with styrene or vinyl acetate. In examples, polyesters are prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, ethylene glycol, 1-allyl, 3-phenyl di-ether of glycerol and 1,3-di-allyl ether of glycerol, and the polyesters dissolved in xylene are mixed with styrene, methy-ethylketone peroxide catalyst and cobalt octoate accelerator to form a varnish. |
