[Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprising a mixture of a compound of vanadium and at least one compound of at least one of the metals copper, manganese, iron and cobalt is used in the preparation of an aliphatic α, #- dicarboxylic acid by contacting molecular oxygen with a cycloaliphatic ketone (optionally in admixture with the corresponding alcohol) in the liquid phase. It is preferred that the catalyst composition is in a form which is soluble in the liquid phase which advantageously comprises an aliphatic monobasic acid, for example acetic acid or propionic acid. The catalyst composition may contain from 0.1 to 10 atoms of copper, manganese, iron and/or cobalt per atom of vanadium. Catalyst compositions exemplified are vanadyl acetylacetonate and cobalt acetate (Examples 2, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13), vanadyl acetylacetonate, cobalt acetate and manganese acetate (Example 6), vanadyl acetylacetonate, cobalt acetate and cupric acetate (Example 9) and vanadyl acetylacetonate, cobalt acetate and ferrous acetylacetonate (Examples 10 and 14); catalyst compositions used in comparative examples include copper acetate and manganese acetate (Example 1) and manganese acetate and cobaltous acetate (Example 5). |
