1,237,293. Graft polymerization process. AMF Inc. 26 March, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 15765/69. Heading C3G. A monomer is grafted on a carrier polymer in the form of a solid shaped article by forming an emulsion comprising said monomer, sufficient water to form an emulsion and an emulsifying agent and contacting under polymerization conditions said carrier polymer with said emulsion, said emulsifying agent serving to promote the wetting of the carrier polymer surface by said emulsion, thereby producing a carrier polymer of substantially unaltered shape having the monomer grafted thereon. Ion exchange groups may subsequently be introduced into the graft polymer. The emulsion may include a solvent for the carrier polymer. In examples, the carrier polymer, which is in film form, and monomers are as follows: (a) poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene)/ poly(vinylidene fluoride, styrene and divinyl benzene; (b) polychlorotrifluoroethylene and monomers as in (a); (c) polyethylene and the said monomers. Graft polymer (b) is chlorosulphonated and hydrolysed and graft polymer (c) is chloromethylated and reacted with dimethylethanolamine. |
