Herbicidal title compds. [I; R1,R2 = H, C1-4 alkyl, C2-6 alkylene; R3 = C1-4 alkyl, C2-4 alkylene, alkynyl, C1-4 halogenoalkyl, C3-5 alkoxyalkyl; Y = halogen, C1-4 alkoxy; n = 1-3 were prepd. Thus, 9.1 g magnesium ethylate, 50 ml toluene and 16.8 g 4-fluorobenzoyl ethyl acetate were mixed and cooled to 5oC. After adding 0.1 g hydroquinone to the mixt., 9.5g chloro-2-ethyl acryloyl was added. The resulting enolate was cyclized by 95% EtOH and 0.5 ml CH3COCl to give 13.5 g I(R1 = H; R2 = R3 = Et; (Y)n = 4-F).
