To reduce the quantity of wire used in a cable of the type having stranded layers of conductors these layers are laid with a reversing lay that exhibits a substantial wrapping angle only at intervals between which the conductors run parallel to, or at a very slight angle to, the longitudinal axis of the cable. At the reversal points, which may be marked on the outside of the cable, the curve of the conductors should be as sharp as possible to enable the maximum length of wire to be lifted out of position when working on the cable. The particular shape of the reversal curve can vary as required. In the apparatus for manufacturing such a cable, Fig. 6, the perforated disc 9 which rotates about cable 10 to lay the wires 11 is coupled to the driving motor 15 by a reversing gear 13 working under the control of a pulse transmitter 16. The gears are designed to operate periodically and change abruptly at a signal from the transmitter to give the required sharp reversal point. |
