A prosthesis for the ball end of a hip joint involves a spherical head fitted onto a separate prefabricated spike as a force fit onto a sleeve fitted over a stub on the top of the spike. Choice of the sleeve allows assembly of a variety of ball sizes onto a given spike profile, or vice versa and/or allow the distance to be varied between the end of the ball and the shoulder which locates the spike on the end of the supporting femur. Pref. the sleeve is of polyethylene, which swells sufficiently at body temp. to anchor the head firmly. Pref. the top of the sleeve is solid and radiused to locate the end of the recess within the ball.
|
