Photo:catalysts, esp. for photolysis of water - comprising semiconductor and group VIIa or Gp=VIII metal

Photocatalysts comprise a semiconductor cpd. (I) and a Group VIIa or VIII metal, where (I) is pref. SrTiO3 and (II) is pref. Rh, Ru, Ir, Pd, Pt, Os, Re or Co (esp. Rh). The catalysts can be prepd. by photo deposition of (II) on (I), pref. by mixing an aq. soln. of a salt of (I) with an aq. suspension of (II) and agitating the mixt. while irradiating with UV light. Photolysis of H2O can be effected with UV light, or with visible light in the presence of a photosensitiser, esp. trivalent Cr ions. The catalysts are esp. useful for photolysis of H2O to produce H2 and O2. They have much higher activity than (I) alone and can be used repeatedly without loss of activity.
