The apparatus is used in particular for spreading out tobacco leaves for cover leaves or wrapping leaves. It has a conveying surface (10), on which each leaf can be subjected to the action of a spreading-out device, away from a hypothetical central line to both sides, transversely to the conveying direction, with outward-oriented frictional forces. In order to ensure that the spreading-out can be undertaken gently and quickly with simple structural means, the leaves being perfectly spread out despite the gentle treatment which avoids damaging the leaves, a perforated bearing surface (10) is provided which is subjected to the action of a vacuum, can be moved in a conveying direction and, when a leaf rests on it, is masked by two intermediate layers (18) whose edges are close together and which are likewise perforated and capable of being moved together with the bearing surface. Drive devices (29) are moreover present, by means of which the intermediate layers can be moved apart, transversely to the conveying direction, when the bearing surface moves, until the leaf bears directly on the bearing surface. <IMAGE>
