1,175,557. Acrylonitrile copolymer fibres. ROHM & HAAS CO. 29 Sept., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 44514/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A fibre containing a copolymer comprising units of acrylonitrile and a monoethylenically unsaturated chlorine-containing monomer, and having a skin with Cl and N content both at least 20% by wt. less than in the core of the fibre, is made by spinning the copolymer into a coagulating bath containing 65-70% by wt. HNO 3 at 75-100‹ C. The copolymer may contain at least 45% each of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride and 0-5% of another comonomer, e.g. 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, and may be spun into constant boiling nitric acid at or above 90‹ C. The copolymer may take the form of a latex containing 14% of an anionic sulphate or sulphonate surfactant, and the coagulating bath may contain an acid-stable inorganic salt having a stabilizing effect on the copolymer, e.g. MgBr 2 , Mg(NO 3 ) 2 or LiNO 3 . The filaments may be stretched 5-15X at 150-250‹ C., e.g. in steam. |
