The device enables blind people to understand print by using an optical system in the form of a micro camera for forming an image of an object character prevented to a matrix of photosensors. The device then generates a representative set of electrical signals. The signals are digital codes from which are extracted signals characterising the image for vertically centring the image and signals identifying the dimensions of characters. A circuit verifies that the signals extracted represent a single character and warns the user to move the camera if this is not the case. The character is then identified and indicated to the user by, for example, a cooperating tape recorder or braille character indicator.
