Valve gland packing removal device - has explosion chamber communicating with explosive cartridge to blow out gland packing

The valve has conventional gland packing (18) to prevent leakage of the fluid in the pipeline along the valve spindle (12). A chamfered ring (30) is inserted below the packing and rests on a support piece (20) to form an expansion chamber (32) between the ring (30) and the support piece (20). The chamber is connected by a passage (34) to a breech block (36) holding an explosive cartridge (38). The cartridge is retained by a nut (42) which has a percussion pin (40). With the gland nuts (28) and bridge (26) removed, detonation of the cartridge blows out the old gland packing.
