1,175,709. Catalytic hydrogenation reactor. LUMMUS CO. 21 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 43108/67. Heading B1F. In an apparatus for the catalytic hydrogenation of liquids, hydrogen and liquid introduced by line 42 passes through catalyst 16 and foraminous plate 12, gas phase separates out in chamber 20 and leaves via line 28 while liquid phase passes on through catalyst bed 18 and foraminous plate 24 where it contacts a countercurrent stream of hydrogen from line 48, and the hydrogenated liquid leaves via 50. The hydrogenation ofbenzene to cyclohexane is described. The catalyst may be nickel, platinum or palladium on a support such as alumina, silica, kieselguhr, diatomaceous earth, magnesia or zirconia.
