A stepping motor and cam combination is used to move a pick-up for a magnetic disc recording system on a radial path. The magnetic disc (3) has a series of tracks in the form of concentric circles (Sl-Sn). The pick-up (11) is moved on a guide bar (14) to align with any one of these tracks. An actuating bar (12) connects with a cam follower (13) that is in contact with a cam profile (5) that has a spiral profile that generates the correct head positions. The cam is indexed by a stepping motor via a gear drive. The cam has an outer segment profile that aids retention in a specific position.
