A preferably two-stage gas compressor (1) is described which has two opposing cylinders (31, 41), in which pistons (30 and 40), which are fixed at the ends of a spindle (20), are displaceable forwards and backwards. The spindle (20) is carried in an axial direction through a spindle nut (14), which is part of the rotor of an electric motor (16). The electric motor (16) (preferably an alternating current motor) drives the pistons (30 and 40) in their reciprocating movement to the stop on the associated cylinder head (32 and 42), which is determined by a control unit which thereupon reverses the running direction of the motor (16). Owing to the output characteristic of alternating current motors, the compressor (1) functions relatively slowly and - also due to low chamber residual volumes - achieves high compression ratios without contaminating the gas with constituents of the lubricant, because self-lubricating piston seals can be used. <IMAGE> |
