A flame-proof electrical contact assembly has a body (1) provided with means for supplying electrical power to fixed contacts (6) located at an inner region to a tubular housing (3) of circular cross-section, a contact block (4) having screw threads co-operating with complementary threads in the wall of the housing (3) to render it movable axially within the housing (3) upon rotation of the contact block (4), contacts (8) carried by the contact block (4) for co-operation with the fixed contacts (6) by physical engagement therewith when the contact block (4) is located at an innermost position in the housing (3), plug-in type contact terminals (9) at the outer region of the contact block (4) for co-operation with a complementary terminal member such as a light fitting, and stop means (13) for operatively preventing at least inadvertent movement of the contact block (4) out of the tubular housing. The screw threads engage with a screw thread on a terminal member connected thereto in use such that the terminal member latter can only be engaged with and disengaged from the contact block (4) when the contact block is in an outer position and the screw threads on the housing are disengaged from the terminal member.
