The effects of operating faults or failures in a nuclear power plant involving discharge of steam from the circuit are limited by condensing the steam-air mixt. at supersonic speed by contact with liq. flowing in the same direction. The supersonic speed is itself generated by the energy released in the fault. The rate of condensation of the escaping steam is considerably increased. The size of the plant required is reduced and its reliability is regard to radioactive pollution of the environment is considerably improved.
