A charge coupled device has an input stage that is designed to maintain the integrity of an analogue input signal. The semiconductor input stage has a high resistance substrate e.g. gallium arsenide (2), with a transfer electrode system (4). The transfer electrodes connect a lower stage (5) and a top stage (6). Inputs are provided to two electrodes (8,9) that are either of a Schottky type or a contact of the type used in junction FET devices. The semiconductor layer thicknesses (d1,d2) are specifically related.
