A device for detecting the charged state of the ion exchange material of a water softening plant for dish-washing or washing machines operates on the principle of an expansion element in the ion exchanger, which expands according to the condition of the resin. The expansion element is a sphere, resting in a seating on a support; the top of the sphere bears against the underside of a leaf spring, having a strain gauge strip attached to it. Thus, as the sphere expands with the changing condition of the resin, the leaf spring is raised and can be used as an actuator for triggering a regenerating operation. Used for the ion exchange resin installations of dish washing and washing machines. The arrangement is simple and requires no sealing rings as in a preceding device operating on the piston-cylinder principle.
