The compounds dl-3,5,17-trimethyl-5α-gona- 2,13(17) - diene (III), dl - 3#.5,17 - trimethyl- 5α - gon - 13(17) - en - 3# - ol (IIIA) and dl- 3,5,17 - trimethyl - 5α - gona - 3,13(17) - diene (IIIB), of which compounds III and IIIA are claimed per se, are prepared from 2-(7,11- dimethyl - irons,trans - dodeca - 3,7,11 - trienyl)- 3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-ol (II) by reaction with a strong acid (which may be a protonic or a Lewis acid). When a mixture of products is obtained it may be separated chromatographically. Compound III is alternatively prepared by dehydrating compound IIIA with phosphorus oxychloride in pyridine. (Note: Compounds III, IIIA and IIIB are named in the Specification as dl - 3,17 - dimethyl - A - nor- D - homoestra - 3,16 - diene, dl - 3,17 - dimethyl- A - nor - D - homoestr - 3 - en - 17 - ol and dl- 3,17 - dimethyl - A - nor - D - homoestra - 3,17- diene respectively.)
