A tape drive system includes a drive motor, a tape drive capstan driven by the drive motor in a fixed rotational relationship with the motor and a tone wheel also driven by the motor and having a fixed rotational relationship to the drive motor. The tone wheel carries a holographic recording which is a series of one dimensional radial holograms matched to the mechanical drive system driving the tone wheel by incorporating mechanical drive errors in the holographic recordings which are recorded during a combined rotation of the motor, capstan and tone wheel. The holographic recording on the tone wheel is read during subsequent use of the tape drive system involving a rotation of the tone wheel by a laser playback system to produce control signals for a drive motor energizing means to correct intrinsic drive system errors in a "sync-off-tach" type of operation.</p> |
