A process for the preparation of an ester of the general formula: (I) wherein R represents an optionally-substituted hydrocarbyl group and A represents a hydrogen atom, or a phenoxy, phenylthio or benzyl group, characterized in that a benzaldehyde of the general formula: (II) is reacted with an acid anhydride of the general formula: (III) wherein R has the same meaning as in formula I, in the presence of water and a water-soluble cyanide.
