Appts. for assembling a pair of slide fastener stringers includes a pair of pulling rollers(5,6) on a drive shaft(22) and contacted by a pair of auxiliary rollers to form two inlet nips, with a binder member(7) fixed at the inlet side to direct the stringers into the nips via guide grooves(11). A respective probe is freely transversely movable to enter or withdraw from each groove to detect leading fastener elements and to retard the advancement of the leading stringer when its elements are contacted. A differential transmission retards the roller advancing the leading stringer and simultaneously accelerates the other to longitudinally align mismatched rows of elements.
