In apparatus for smoothing a sheet 2 in a press capable of recto and verso printing, smoothing in the direction of travel of the sheet and transverse thereto is effected by feeding the sheet onto a transfer drum 1 past a suction head 4 split into parts 5, 6 which move apart as the sheet travels over its suction surface.
