Fibre-forming linear polyesters having recurring units of formula wherein R is phenylene, biphenylene or isopropylidene-4,41-diphenylene are prepared by polycondensing a diester of a suitable dihydric phenol with a low molecular weight monocarboxylic acid ester of 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl adipic acid, the final part of the polycondensation being carried out at reduced pressure, possibly by a solid phase technique. The polyester may contain up to 10 mole per cent of other dihydric phenols or dicarboxylic acids. Specified reactants are: phenols-hydroquinone, 4,41-dihydroxybiphenyl and 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane; other dihydric phenols-resorcinol, dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone, dihydroxydiphenyl, dihydroxydiphenylmethane, diphenylolpropane or tetrachlorodiphenylol propane; other acids- α,α,α<SP>1</SP>,α<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl pimelic, terephthalic, isophthalic, bibenzoic or naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic. |
