Protective device with a high resistance to impact and explosions comprises a laminated material based on (in)organic fibre fabrics and a thermosetting or thermoplastic viscoelastic resin with a loss factor tan delta of 0.5-1.5, and a modulus of elasticity of 1-1000 MN/sq.m at a frequency of 100 Hz and at the usage temp. Pref. fibre fabrics are of aromatic polyamide or glass fibres and the viscoelastic resin is an epoxy or polyester resin. The resin content of the material is e.g. between 10 and 30 wt.% esp. 15 and 24 wt.% of the total wt. of the material. Prods. are fibre-reinforced materials with excellent resistance to impact, e.g. by bullets or flying debris from explosions. The prods. are esp. useful in the prodn. of lightweight armour plating and motor vehicle bumpers.
