PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an antiphlogistic, an analgesic, and an antipyretic in a short process, by reacting o-chlorophenylacetic acid or its alkali metal salt with 2,6-dichloroaniline in the presence of a base and a specific amount of copper salt or copper powder. CONSTITUTION:o-Chlorophenylacetic acid shown by the formula III or its alkali metal salt shown by the formula IV is reacted with 2,6-dichloroaniline shown by the formula V in a solvent, e.g., N,N-dimethylformamide, etc. in the presence of a base and >=0.5mol based on 1mol o-chlorophenylacetic acid of copper salt (e.g., cuprous iodide, etc.) and/or copper powder (e.g., activated copper poweder) using a reaction promotor, preferably potassium iodide, etc. under heating at 120-160 deg.C for 2- 24hr, to give the desired compound shown by the formulaIor its salt shown by the formula II(M is alkali metal).
