PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an additive for plastic molded article, a surface-active agent, etc. in high yield, by reducing a quaternary ammonium salt having an allyl group with H2 in the presence of a complex of rhodium metal or ruthenium metal as a reduction catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A quaternary ammonium salt having a propyl group of formula II is prepared by the catalytic reduction of an allyl group-containing quaternary ammonium salt of formulaI(R is alkyl or cycloalkyl; n is 1-4) with molecular hydrogen. The reduction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of a complex of rhodium metal or ruthenium metal (prepared by coordinating a ligand such as triphenyl phosphine to a halide of rhodium or ruthenium), in pref. anhydrous or hydrated lower aliphatic alcohol.
