In an apparatus for adjusting the concentration of a pre- selected constituent 11 of a feed material 12, the feed material flows through flow passages defined by barriers 13 superimposed on one another, which selectively allow the constituent 11 to pass. The feed material flow separates the barriers 13 elastically in order to maintain a laminar flow through the said barriers. The predetermined constituent 11 can be directed to flow selectively through the barriers 13 either into or out from the feed material 12. <IMAGE>
