A carbon-based mol. sieve of 0.4- 0.6 nm pores is allowed to adsorb Br to give a product which adsorbs org. compds. from air. Thus, 50g granular shirasagi MSC-5A-416 contg. C 95, 0 2, H 0.8, and ash 1.5 % and of surface area 600 m2/g and 93 % 0.4-0.6 nm diam. pore vol. ratio as a column in a 60 mm diam. glass tube was circulated with 30 L/min air with addn. of 1.0 g/min Br to adsorb 30.1 % Br. When equilibrated with air contg. 200 ppm C2H4, the adsorption was 8.2, 6.3, or 5.8 mL/g after 1, 5, or 30 days of prepn., vs. 7.4, 3.2, or 2.6 with shirasagi G-416 of surface area 1150 m2/g, pore vol. ratio 6 %, and Br adsorption 16.0 %.
