FUEL/AIR MIXING BY SWIRL CHAMBER

An air/fuel homogenising means for use downstream of a carburettor and upstream of the intake to an internal combustion engine more effectively to homogenise and/or otherwise assist the entrainment of the fuel in the air stream from the carburettor. The homogenising means comprises a swirl chamber into which the air/fuel mix enters (at 7) tangentially of the swirl to be created therein and from which it exits (at 9) axially of the swirl created therein. The boundary (11) or at least a portion thereof against which the swirling fuel/air mix impinges or passes is heated to a temperature above ambient temperature or at least the temperature of the fuel/air mix to assist in vapourisation. Such heating is preferably carried out with the use of a fluid jacket (6) which receives either exhaust gases or coolant from the engine.
