Multicompartment molten metal holding furnace - e.g. for use in aluminium die casting plant

Molten metal holding furnace has a multi-compartment chamber with one or more charging compartments, one or more holding compartments and one or more withdrawal compartments, the holding compartment(s) being covered by a lid having a heater on its inside face for direct heating of the molten metal. The holding compartment communicates with the charging and withdrawal compartments by means of passageways below the surface of the molten metal. The furnace is useful e.g. for holding molten aluminium (alloys) in a die casting plant. It can be kept in operation even when the surface of the molten metal cools e.g. when the lid is removed for repair, it requires less energy for holding the metal at the required temp., and any dross on the metal surface in the charging compartment is not transferred to the other compartments.
