A method of inhibiting plant growth comprises applying to emerged plants or to areas sown with them, an effective plant growth inhibiting amount of an .alpha.-aminoalkane phosphonous acid of the formula (1), wherein R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which is unsubstituted or substituted by hydroxyl, or plant-physiological-ly acceptable salts thereof, including all optical isomers of the said acids and salts.
