PURPOSE:To measure clearances quantitatively and quickly by moving a wire of a known diameter in the direction rectangular to the direction of the clearance between mutually opposite members from a reference position until it abuts on both of the members and measuring the moving distance thereof. CONSTITUTION:In the csse of measuring, for example, the valve clearance of an engine, a wire 12 which has a know diameter and is supported in the yoke part 11 of a measuring device 10 is placed on the top end surface 1a of a valve stem 1, and a body 10 of the measuring device is moved horizontally to press the leading end face 14b of the core 14 of a differential transformer 13 to the side surface of the stem 1. If with this point as a reference the body 10 is further moved horizontally, the body 10 advances by overcoming the force of a spring 16, and stops as the wire abuts on the bottom end spherical face 3a of an adjusting screw 3 and the top end face 1a of the stem 1.
