The clutch has an electromagnet coil is fitted onto the diesel engine output shaft and, once the diesel engine is started, is supplied by up to fifteen times normal voltage to increase the time rate of current build up. When the coil is energised the magnetic flux links the iron around the coil, passes across the air gap and through the mobile plate coupled to the alternator shaft, drawing the two together. The inside of the outer rim of the moving plate and the outside of the fixed element are cut as matching truncated cones with a taper of between 50 and 140 degrees, and the inside of the moving plate taper has a non-magnetic, resin, bonded copper friction block fitted, providing the friction coupling between engine and alternator. The clutch is used in an emergency stand-by electricity generating system.
|
