Positive electrode for sodium:sulphur battery - where thin resistive layer is used between positive sulphur electrode and solid electrolyte tube to improve recharging of battery

The electrochemical battery has a negative reservoir contg. molten sodium, and a positive reservoir. A solid electrolyte tube (I) is located in one reservoir with its mouth connected to the other reservoir. In the positive reservoir is a positive electrode using an active material which is sulphur impregnating graphite fibres. The sulphur is sepd. from tube (I) by a thin resistance layer (II) on tube (I). Layer (II) consists of a mixt. contg. by wt. 5-30% carbon fibres and 70-95% glass fibres. The positive electrode is pref. made from three 120 deg. moulded segments, where graphite fibres are covered with mixt. (II) and impregnated with molten sulphur. Improved rechargeability and reliability for the battery.
