In a method of electric arc melting with consumable electrodes, the consumable electrode is connected to the positive pole and the cooled crucible to the negative pole of a D.C. source, the current density at the crucible is maintained between 6À6 and 12À4 amps/sq. cm., and the pressure inside the furnace is maintained below 0À3 mm. Hg. Ingots of titanium and titanium based alloys are produced by this method. |
