The base of the coffin has a series of channels (c,d,e,f) at one end and the gases are directed to flow along each in turn before passing through an orifice (j) into the chimney (g). Apart from this vent which induces gas flow the urn is sealed. The chimney has a series of interior baffles dressed also with charcoal to slow down the rate of flow of gas to prolong the purifying process. If several coffins are placed on top of each other, the chimneys can be interconnected.
