A lightweight ceramic is obtained from a mixture of a ceramic powder, 1-20% of a water soluble high molecular weight organic substance in solution, and a blowing agent decomposable at 50-300‹ C., and of 5000-50,000 c.p.s. viscosity, by placing in a mould and heating to foam and gel the mixture, followed by firing at 800-1600‹ C. Optionals are clay, colloidal Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 , borax or boric acid, Bu 3 PO 4 , silicones, talc, NaCl, Na 2 SiF 6 , Na 2 SO 4 and Na N-lauroyl sarcosinate. Ceramics listed are numerous and include nitrides of B, Be, Cr, Si, Ta, Ti and Zr; oxides of Al, Ba, Ca, Co and Fe; carbides of Me, Tn and W; and SiO 2 , dolomite wollastonite, felspar, kaolin, pyrophyllite and limestone. The blowing agent is organic e.g. an azo compound or inorganic e.g. Na or NH 4 bicarbonate or (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 . |
