The device comprises a series of parallel, horizontal bars (R) which are retained between a pair of flat vertical plates (1). The bars are graduated and slide horizontally between the plates. Each bar can be moved independently and has a rounded boss (5) formed at one end. In use, the plates are held vertically and the bars are moved independently so that each boss butts against one of the vertebrae. The plates are then clamped together to retain the bars. The line defined by the ends of the bosses indicates the profile of the spine.
