PURPOSE:To develop an electrolytic cell free from failure and deformation of an ion exchange membrane by providing thin film electrodes of water permeable porous metals, or metallic oxides on one or both surfaces of the ion exchange membrane in the electrolytic cell for brine or the like using the ion exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:Anode 7 and cathode 8 of water permeable porous metallic layers are laminated by a hot press or the like on both surfaces of a cation exchange membrane 3 made of a fluoropolymer or divinyl benzene polymer in an electrolytic cell used for electrolysis of brine or the like. In this case, metals such as Ir, Rh, and Pt or their alloys or oxides are used for the anode material and platinum group metals are used for the cathode material. Since the spacing between the anode and the cathode are proximate, electric power efficiency is excellent. Further, a thin layer 6 of entangled fibrous materials is provided on the cathode side, and the entire part is sandwiched by an anode side current collector 1 and a cathode side current collector 2 having water permeable through-holes 4, 5 on the outermost sides. The distance between the anode and the cathode does nt fluctute, uniform electric current is flowed, and the failure and deformation of the ion exchange membrane owing to partial overcurrent are obviated. |
