Water soluble and/or dispersable coating compsn. are obtained by grafting an ethylenic alpha, beta-dicarboxylic acid compound onto polybutadiene (I) and forming an inorganic basic salt of the dicarboxylic acid. (I) may be a homo ro copolymer of butadiene or a mixture of polymers and has average mol. weight 2000-100,000; the 1-2 bond content in the polymer is less than 80% and the butadiene content greater than 50%. The basic material is alkali, alkali earth, ammonia, amine or alkanolamine. |
