1281182 Electric selective signalling; matrix displays INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 5 Dec 1969 [7 Jan 1969] 59397/69 Headings G4H and G5C A display system comprises a display device 20 including selectively energizable display elements 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60 and control circuits 26 or 28 for causing the display device either to display a binary representation of a first input to the system or to display an arabic numeral corresponding to a second input to the system. The display elements may be electroluminescent panels, incandescent bulbs or gasfilled tubes and are connected to drivers 1D. Data in the form of characters made up of combinations of binary values is fed to a counter 22, which advances one for each character. The binary coded output on four leads 40, 42, 44, 46 is fed to a recoder 62 having seven output leads 64-76. With a switch 86 in an open position, an inverter 88 enables the circuit 26 to illuminate certain elements of the device 20 so that an arabic numeral equal to the number of characters fed to the counter is displayed. The input data is also fed to a register 24 having binary coded outputs 32-38 so that when the switch 86 is closed the circuit 28 causes illumination of the elements 60, 56, 48 or 52 denoting the binary values 1, 2, 4 or 8 or a combination thereof representing the character in the register. |
