The hatch cover is in halves, each with at least two interconnected leaves movable between a stowed position along one transverse sill and a closed position when they meet to seal a butt joint. In this position the leaves are positively held transversely along one edge, to the longitudinal sill they rest on. Above the conventional gap-sealing arrangement the butt joint has a second seal, comprising along one cover leading edge a drainage gutter, whose upright portion forms an abutment for a tubular sealing bead along the other. The vertical edge-gaps of the covers have splashguards.
