The pump unit comprising a single or multi-stage pump and an electric drive motor is fitted within the fuel tank with the pump as close as possible to the base of the tank to allow full evacuation. The pump has two suction zones respectively facing towards and away from the base of the tank. The pump rotor and the motor rotor are both supported by a fixed axis secured at one end to the pump and plate via a fixing pin projecting from the end plate to fit into a central bore in the end of the axis. The pump end plate has the min. possible thickness. The pump unit allows the tank to be as near as possible fully evacuated.
