Device on, for example, a centrifugal pump for keeping particles suspended in a liquid away from a seal (18, 20), preferably of the plane face type, mounted between a housing (12) containing the liquid and a rotating shaft (10) passing through the latter. An intermediate wall (24) is placed between a non-rotating wall surface (16) and a shaft part rotating in the liquid and this intermediate wall is designed with at least one outer opening (36) and one inner opening (34), adjacent to the intermediate wall and to the shaft part respectively. These openings are connected to one another via a clear space (28) in front of the sealing faces (22; 48) such that the liquid set in rotation by the shaft or elements seated on the latter is induced to flow in the axial direction through one of these openings from the liquid space of the housing to the clear space and back to the liquid space through the other opening (36), taking along with it any particles in the clear space. <IMAGE>
